How You Can Help

You can play your part in a vital service supporting hospitals, families and your community across the South East.

Our volunteers are men and women from all walks of life. While some are retired many are employed elsewhere and provide this service in their spare time. All volunteers are Garda vetted, carry photo-ID, and have completed a rigorous training programme. No volunteer is paid for their service.

And you don’t have to be a biker (although many of us are). Lots of different volunteer roles are available. Volunteer Now – Bike Riders, Car Drivers, Mechanics, Controllers, Administrators, Fundraisers, Social Media / PR & Marketing Specialists and other roles are all available. Full training is provided.

Here’s more information on some of the different roles:

car driver Blood Bikes

BECOME A VOLUNTEER RIDER OR DRIVER

Riding one of our liveried bikes and wearing your Blood Bike South East jacket you will cover a weeknight or weekend shift. Working closely with the duty controller you will collect and deliver anything from medical samples, medical records, scans, x-rays, test results, or urgent medicines to medical devices or human breast milk. For riders and drivers, we have a minimum age of 25 years, and at least 3 years riding/driving experience, a full license and no more than 3 penalty points. We are particularly interested in riders or drivers with advanced skills (e.g., Garda, Defence Forces, ROSPA).

BECOME A VOLUNTEER CONTROLLER

Controllers are at the heart of our organization. They take the calls, organise link-up with other blood bike groups, assign the duty riders, monitor progress, keep the records up to date and deal with everything else that crops up along the way. Controllers tend be calm organized people who usually have some computer or administration experience. Typically, a controller will be on duty for 3 – 5 days and will carry the BBSE mobile phone so that they are in contact all the time.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER FUNDRAISER

Fundraisers are always needed – remember we are a voluntary organization and 100% of funds raised goes directly into the service we provide to our community. What you achieve keeps the wheels in motion and allows everything else to happen. From organizing or taking part in bucket shakes to helping to find corporate sponsors there are many ways you can help.

OTHER VOLUNTEER ROLES

There are lots of other volunteer roles available. Maybe you have a few spare hours and a talent that will make a real difference. Mechanics, Accountants, Administrators, Social Media / PR & Marketing Specialists are all essential roles to help deliver this vital service.
